What You Can Do To Help

2008 HURRICANE RELIEF FAMILY KIT

The kits that we put together were for Cuban families, based on 5 persons per family, and contained the following: 2 towels, bath or mid size, 1 tube toothpaste, 5 tooth brushes, 1 bottle shampoo (preferably shampoo and conditioner in one), 3 disposable razors, comb and hair brush, 3 bars og hand soap, 2 rolls toilet paper, 1 small mirror, 10 to 15 garbage bags, 5 plates, 5 acrylic glasses, 5 sets of silverware, fry pan and cooking pot, dish cleaning sponge, 1 small package female sanitary pads, 1 package detergent (pouch or box), 1 20 litre plastic pail with lid, or cardboard box to hold above items. Other possible items, would be : skin cream, condoms, deodorant, cloth diapers and more...
The above list was/is a guideline and can be varied somewhat if need be. These kits were distributed to families in hurricane ravaged areas of Cuba, and given to those who have lost their home or substantial part of it, and were experiencing the greatest need. e.g.: families where a woman is pregnant, where a member(s) is physically or mentally impaired, old people in poor health, families with young children. We hope that with the participation of others we can send these in future hurricane seasons to affected areas in countries where great need arises.

The job of getting full containers to where they're most needed consists of many specific steps.

  • Someone needs to identify potential sources of supply.
  • We need to contact and solicit help from those sources.
  • We then need to arrange to pick up the donations, and to get them to the warehouse.
  • Once there, we need to sort, package, identify, and label all items.
  • On packing days, we need many hands to fill these containers to absolute maximum capacity.
  • We then need to clean up the warehouse, and prepare to go through the full cycle again.

So we need a wide range of talents and abilities to make all of this happen. Perhaps you're a great communicator: help us spread the word! Maybe you have a vehicle and some time on your hands - a great opportunity to help with pickups. If you're close enough to the warehouse, you could join a sorting or packing party.

Our network of volunteers includes people from Woodstock, St. Thomas, London,
Brantford, Cambridge, Chatham, Halton, Goderich, Kitchener,Toronto, Oshawa, Cobourg and Barrie.
